In 1942, the U.S. Army gave American soldiers headed to Britain a handbook. Alongside advice about pubs, money, and making tea, it included this warning:
“It is always impolite to criticize your hosts; it is militarily stupid to criticize your allies.”
Apparently, the War Department anticipated that some Americans might need a reminder.
In this video, I examine Instructions for American Servicemen in Britain, a remarkable guide to understanding the people fighting alongside you. From sharing a family’s wartime rations to recognizing the service of British women under fire, the handbook explained sacrifices that an arriving American might otherwise overlook.
It also offers a lesson for today: you can defend American interests, disagree with an ally’s policies, and still treat that country with respect.
