How One Man Redefined Modern Terrorism

Most people associate modern Middle Eastern terrorism with religious extremism. But one of its most influential figures was George Habash—a Greek Orthodox Christian, physician, Marxist revolutionary, and founder of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

In this video, I examine how the aircraft hijackings of the 1960s and 1970s transformed terrorism into international theater. We’ll look at the Six-Day War, the rise of the PFLP, Black September, the Munich massacre, and the specialized counterterrorism forces created in response.

George Habash didn’t invent terrorism or aircraft hijacking. What he helped perfect was the use of international spectacle as a weapon. A few gunmen could seize an airplane, command the world’s television screens, and generate more attention than an entire army.

Today, terrorists no longer need to hijack an airplane to capture a global audience. They can hijack an algorithm.
