Lockheed Martin has showcased a new capability that could significantly enhance the U.S. Army’s precision-strike flexibility by enabling rockets to change targets after launch. During the demonstration, an existing Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) rocket successfully received updated targeting information in flight, allowing it to redirect its trajectory and engage a moving target.
The test was conducted at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, in collaboration with the U.S. Army. Lockheed Martin integrated a communications link and an upgraded guidance system into the rocket’s existing architecture, enabling in-flight target updates. This approach could provide the Army with greater operational flexibility and responsiveness while expanding the capabilities of its existing precision fires arsenal without requiring a fundamental redesign of the GMLRS weapon system.
This is a pretty interesting development , let’s dive deeper.
