The burning cars make the headlines. But what brought people into the streets in the first place—and why should Americans care?
In this video, I explain the grievances behind France’s protests: struggling schools, rising household costs, fuel prices and anger over policing. I also explain why peaceful demonstrators and people committing arson cannot be treated as one group.
Then we get into the NATO connection. A government facing pressure to fix schools and lower household bills could have a harder time securing support for additional military spending and assistance to Ukraine. You can promise ammunition at a NATO summit. You still have to get the money approved back home.
And before you share that dramatic protest video, check its date, location and source. One burning car cannot explain an entire country.
