Nine Kazakh servicemen have died after 19 military personnel were swept into the Caspian Sea during military exercises in Kazakhstan, the country’s Defence Ministry said. According to the latest information, three servicemen were rescued, with one of them hospitalized. The search for the remaining personnel is continuing. The incident occurred during exercises in the Mangystau region after weather conditions deteriorated in the area where the drills were being conducted. A Defence Ministry commission has been dispatched to the scene, headed by Defence Minister Dauren Kossanov. Units from Kazakhstan’s Armed Forces and the Ministry of Emergency Situations are taking part in the ongoing search-and-rescue operation. Kazakhstan’s Defence Ministry had previously announced the “Khazar Qorgany – 2026” naval exercises in the country’s sector of the Caspian Sea. The drills involve naval vessels and boats, hydrographic ships, Coast Guard units of the National Security Committee’s Border Service, and aircraft from Kazakhstan’s Air Defence Forces.
