Can the Pentagon prepare for autonomous warfare without creating another layer of bureaucracy?
In this video, I examine Pete Hegseth’s proposed Autonomous Warfare Command, the Army’s Futures and Autonomous Systems Command, and the effort to get drones and other unmanned systems into troops’ hands faster.
The challenge goes beyond building better drones. It means changing how the military buys equipment, learns from combat, and gives smaller companies a chance to compete. Russia’s adaptation in Ukraine offers some uncomfortable lessons. Ukraine and our allies offer opportunities to learn without paying for every lesson ourselves.
There’s real promise here. But a new headquarters and another four-star general won’t automatically produce innovation. Can this command cut through the red tape—or will it become more of it?
