On February 20, 1959, an abrupt announcement in the Canadian House of Commons shattered one of the most ambitious aviation endeavors of the twentieth century. At Malton, Ontario, the assembly lines of A.V. Roe Canada stopped dead. Fourteen thousand engineers, technicians, and craftspeople were summarily discharged, bringing an immediate end to the CF-105 Arrow program. Conceived during the tense early years of the Cold War, the Arrow was designed to defend North America against high-altitude Soviet supersonic bombers crossing the vast Arctic frontier.
The story of Avro Canada began in postwar optimism under the guidance of C.D. Howe and Sir Roy Dobson. After pioneering North America’s first commercial jet transport—the C-102 Jetliner—and successfully producing nearly seven hundred CF-100 Canuck all-weather fighters for the Royal Canadian Air Force, Avro tackled an unprecedented challenge. Led by chief designer James Floyd, the team bypassed conventional prototyping to build a massive, twin-engine delta-wing interceptor capable of Mach 2 speeds at altitudes exceeding 50,000 feet. Innovative engineering tackled extreme aerodynamic friction and heat distribution, incorporating scale rocket tests fired into Lake Ontario and an interchangeable internal weapons bay devised by Robert Lindley.
On March 25, 1958, legendary test pilot Jan Zurakowski climbed into Arrow 201 for its maiden flight. Over the course of subsequent trials, the Arrow proved extraordinarily stable, comfortably achieving Mach 1.9 on interim Pratt & Whitney engines while awaiting the homegrown, immensely powerful Orenda Iroquois powerplants. Yet, as the Conservative government of Prime Minister John Diefenbaker grappled with spiraling development costs and the dawn of the intercontinental ballistic missile, political support collapsed. The Arrow was terminated in favor of the American Bomarc surface-to-air missile and second-hand CF-101 Voodoos. In the weeks that followed, government directives ordered the immediate destruction of all five flying airframes, tooling jigs, and engineering records, reducing Canada's premier jet interceptor to scrap metal sold for pennies a pound. The diaspora of displaced Avro engineers went on to lead pivotal engineering roles within NASA’s Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo space programs.
