America’s First Operational Hypersonic Cruise Missile?

The Hypersonic Attack Cruise Missile (HACM) is a US air-launched weapon designed to fly faster than Mach 5 using a scramjet engine developed by Northrop Grumman, with Raytheon leading missile development. Created through US-Australian cooperation under the SCIFiRE program, HACM is intended to give fighter jets such as the F-15E the ability to strike high-value, time-sensitive targets while giving enemy air defenses less time to react. Its first flight test took place over an Australian test range, but key details—including its exact range, top speed and test performance—remain undisclosed. With a tight development schedule and potentially high procurement costs, HACM must still prove it can enter service on time and be produced in sufficient numbers to justify its price.
