The Heinkel He 219 Uhu was designed for one terrifying purpose: hunt British bombers in complete darkness. Armed with radar, heavy cannons, upward-firing Schräge Musik weapons, and even ejection seats for both crewmen, the Uhu represented one of Nazi Germany’s most advanced night fighters. Its potential became clear during its first combat mission in June 1943, when Major Werner Streib claimed five RAF bombers in less than 80 minutes only to crash the prototype while landing moments later. As the war intensified, He 219 crews learned to use airborne radar to creep beneath Lancasters and Halifaxes, hiding in their defensive blind spots before firing devastating 30mm cannon rounds upward into their vulnerable undersides.
In the right hands, the results could be brutal: pilot Wilhelm Morlock was credited with six bombers in just 12 minutes, while other crews discovered that getting dangerously close in darkness could just as easily turn the hunter into the victim. Yet the Uhu’s greatest enemy was ultimately not an Allied bomber. Production disputes, specialized components, damaged factories, maintenance demands, and Germany’s collapsing supply system prevented the aircraft from ever appearing in the numbers needed to transform the night war.
Only around 268 He 219s entered service, and by April 1945 just three aircraft in Nachtjagdgeschwader 1 were reportedly airworthy. This is the incredible story of the He 219 Uhu, the deadly night hunter that proved what it could do against the RAF—but arrived too late, and in too few numbers, to change Germany’s fate.
