Infrared is not as great a search & track system for fighters as many people believe. There are many technical problems. The lack of range information limits attack options; the infrared spectrum has only a few “windows” where the IR light can penetrate the natural molecules in the atmosphere. The F-35 is designed for improved IR stealth.
