Hundreds of students march in Athens for better education

Students and teachers took to the streets of central Athens on Thursday for a nationwide education protest, calling for better conditions in schools and universities. According to Associated Press hundreds of demonstrators marched through the city, carrying banners and flags and chanting anti-government slogans. Their demands included increased funding for education, repairs to deteriorating school buildings and opposition to the introduction of nationwide examinations in high schools. "We are joining our voices with those of students and university students in France, who are holding similar demonstrations right now," Maria Kourakou, a students association chairperson said. "We, the university students, refuse to accept the dilemma imposed on us by their policies, the policies pursued by all governments, both in Greece and throughout Europe – whether to pursue our studies or to survive today, in the 21st century." The protesters also voiced their opposition to a proposed amendment to Article 16 of the Greek Constitution, which provides the legal framework for public higher education.
