Russian forces used a humanitarian mission in the occupied city of Oleshky, in Ukraine’s Kherson region, as an opportunity to strengthen their military positions despite a ceasefire being in effect. Before, during and after the evacuation, Russian troops transported heavy military equipment, weapons, ammunition, personnel and supplies into Oleshky and surrounding villages. Video aired by Sky News shows a convoy of Russian military vehicles moving through the city during the humanitarian operation, raising further concerns about Moscow’s use of the ceasefire. Russian soldiers also entered residential buildings, searching for basements to establish new military positions and reclaim previously lost ground. Meanwhile, Russian forces were removing the bodies of civilians killed by shelling and landmines from the local morgue, in what appeared to be an effort to conceal the consequences of their attacks. The humanitarian operation followed a ceasefire negotiated through U.S. mediation, which allowed humanitarian aid to enter Oleshky and enabled the evacuation of civilians. Hostilities temporarily ceased under the agreement, creating a window for humanitarian assistance and the safe passage of residents. However, the documented movement of Russian troops and military equipment during this period raises serious questions about whether the ceasefire was respected.
