How Airmen Built a Hack That Could Save the Air Force Billions

Air Force maintainers can spend days replacing expensive aircraft parts, only to discover the problem was software all along. So airmen helped build a tool that gives them a clearer picture of what’s going wrong, and in some cases, what could fail next.

Called AMATS, the system turns C-130 aircraft data into practical troubleshooting information. We spoke with retired Master Sgt. Aaron Cordroch, who helped develop it, and the Air Force about how it works, the maintenance headaches it’s tackling, and why expanding it could save billions.

From tracking down faulty heat-sensing elements to spotting early warning signs of component failure, here’s how airmen are taking some of the guesswork out of keeping military aircraft flying, and what it will take to bring those capabilities to more aircraft.
