Spain train disaster: 50 dead, 170 injured as collision sends carriages plunging down embankment

At least 50 people have been killed and more than 170 injured after two trains collided in Spain, according to Spanish media reports. The crash occurred shortly after 09:00 local time between the municipalities of Mora and Orgaz, in Toledo province, approximately 140km south of Madrid, on the Madrid–Andalusia railway line.
According to Spanish broadcaster RTVE, citing the transport ministry, a high-speed train operated by Renfe rear-ended an Iryo train that was apparently stationary on the tracks. The impact caused at least two carriages to plunge down an embankment. Renfe is Spain’s state-owned national railway operator, while Iryo is a private high-speed rail company. A passenger on board one of the trains told local media that a heavy impact occurred around 40 minutes into the journey. The cause of the collision has not yet been confirmed, although Spanish media reports indicate that the Renfe train struck the stationary Iryo service. Rail operator Adif said all train traffic on the affected line had been suspended at stations along the route as emergency services responded to the crash
