A cheaper interceptor sounds great—until you’re depending on it to stop an incoming missile.

I saw Anduril’s new Steelfin at AUSA in Washington, D.C. In this video, I explain what the company is promising, what modular missile design actually means, and why manufacturing speed could be just as important as the price tag.

We’ll look at Steelfin’s proposed compatibility with Patriot launchers, the Navy’s Mk 41 vertical launch system, and containerized launchers. I’ll also explore what cheaper interceptors might make possible—from distributed air defense to unmanned ships carrying additional missiles.

But Patriot and the Navy’s Standard missile family bring decades of testing and operational experience. Steelfin still has to prove it can do the job.

Could this change how we sustain air defense during a long war? Possibly. Let’s look at the promise—and the questions that testing needs to answer.
