Romanian president weighs response after Black Sea strikes damage commercial ships

Romanian President Nicușor Dan said on Thursday that Romania would respond after commercial ships were damaged in strikes in the Black Sea. According to Associated Press Romanian authorities launched search-and-rescue operations after a fire broke out aboard a ship, leaving eight people missing. Four others were rescued. Asked whether Romania would invoke Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which allows NATO members to consult when their security is threatened, Dan said it was too early to draw conclusions.
Dan was speaking in Brussels ahead of a European Council meeting.
The cause of the fire aboard the San Marino-flagged Wine Trader, a chemical tanker sailing from Tunisia to Romania, was not immediately clear. However, a recent series of drone strikes on ships in the Black Sea has raised fears that Russia’s war in Ukraine could spread.
