Canada just applied to join the Joint Expeditionary Force, a ten-country military coalition built around Britain, the Nordics and the Baltic states — which looks like an odd fit for a North American country until you look at the Arctic instead of Europe. Canada already sits at both ends of the exact geography JEF exists to defend, from Greenland and Iceland to Latvia, where Canadian troops already command a NATO brigade.
I break down what JEF actually does, including a system that tracks Russia’s shadow fleet near undersea cables, and why this application is really about the Arctic.
