Japanese media reports indicate that the U.S. Marine Corps’ Navy-Marine Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System (NMESIS) is scheduled to deploy to Yonaguni Island for the U.S.-Japan Keen Sword military exercise, taking place from October 19 to 29.
The deployment is reportedly being undertaken by the 12th Marine Littoral Regiment, based in Okinawa.
Keen Sword is a major bilateral military exercise involving approximately 45,000 Japanese personnel, alongside U.S. forces and participating elements from other partner nations, including Australia and France.
The exercise is designed to strengthen interoperability, enhance joint operational readiness, and improve the allies’ ability to respond to regional security contingencies.
The reported deployment of NMESIS to Yonaguni is particularly noteworthy given the island’s strategic location near Taiwan and the potential role of land-based anti-ship missiles in future maritime operations across the Indo-Pacific.
Let’s examine the strategic significance of this development
