Could a phone call prevent an AI incident from becoming an international crisis? Only if somebody answers.
Imagine an American AI agent starts attacking Chinese computer networks. Beijing can see the attack—but it may not know whether it’s looking at a software failure, a criminal operation, or an attack authorized by the U.S. government. A bad assumption could turn a technical problem into a national security emergency.
In this video, I explain the case for a U.S.–China AI hotline, what the Cold War’s Washington–Moscow communications link can teach us, and why installing the equipment is the easy part.
We’ll look at AI agents operating outside their assigned tasks, the limits of emergency communications, and what both governments would need to make an incident notification system work. A hotline can’t shut down a rogue system. But it could help people understand what’s happening before they decide to retaliate.
