Vella Lavella Black Sheep Squadron

The famed Black Sheep Squadron lead by Marine Major Greg Pappy Boyington fought from different locations in the Pacific during World War II. Today we are at their base that was located on Vella Lavella here in the Solomon Islands. The Black Sheep spent a short time here on Vella Lavella and it was here that on January 3rd 1944 that Greg Pappy Boyington would take off for his last mission. Boyington would be shot down after his 28th air to air victory. Boyington would be captured by the Japanese and held prisoner until the end of the war. He returned to the United States as a World War II hero and received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the war. In this video we are going to tour the island of Vella Lavella the base of the Black Sheep Squadron. This area is rarely visited and you can still find remnants of the air base.
