US and NATO forces made extensive use of air-to-air refuelling throughout the Cold War. It’s therefore natural to assume that Soviet air forces did the same, but in fact the Soviet Union’s development of aerial tankers was quite different from that in the West. This video looks at the main operational types deployed in the Soviet Union and briefly reflects on the doctrinal differences that shaped their development.
