On April 13, India successfully conducted a test of its first high-energy laser weapon, the Mk-II(A) Laser-Directed Energy Weapon (DEW), at the National Open Air Range in Kurnool, in the state of Andhra Pradesh.Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), the 30-kilowatt laser system is capable of disabling aerial threats at distances of up to 5 kilometers (3.1 miles).Operating at the speed of light, the weapon offers a highly cost-effective alternative to conventional ammunition.
