Autonomous Force Protection

General

This video is based on Gregor Ferguson’s article of the same name in September’s 2025 issue of Wings magazine. Gregor charts how autonomous and uncrewed systems are reshaping force protection in modern air power—from the RAAF’s pioneering MQ-28A Ghost Bat program to the RAF’s StormShroud EW drone, and the U.S. push with Anduril’s YFQ-44A Fury and GA-ASI’s YFQ-42A. We compare what small, attritable collaborative aircraft can (and can’t) do next to heavyweight crewed platforms like the EA-18G Growler, spotlight real manned-unmanned teaming milestones (E-7A Wedgetail flying with Ghost Bats), and look ahead to the carrier-borne MQ-25A Stingray tanker. The bottom line: autonomous teammates add combat mass, reach, and survivability—helping Typhoon, F-35, Super Hornet, and future NGAD/F/A-XX fighters strike harder and come home safer.
